Getting around Cyprus

Cyprus is small (3rd-largest Mediterranean island, 240km coast) and car-dependent outside the central districts of Limassol and Nicosia. Public transport is improving but is not the headline option for most expats.

Driving

  • · Drive on the LEFT (UK-style)
  • · Right-hand-drive vehicles standard; LHD legal but resale harder
  • · Used car market deep — 2010+ Toyotas, Hyundais common
  • · Annual MOT (€40), road tax based on engine + emissions
  • · Third-party insurance from €280/yr; comprehensive €500–€1,200
  • · Speed limits: 100 km/h motorway, 80 main roads, 50 town

Public buses

  • · District-by-district networks (different operators per district)
  • · Reasonable urban service in Limassol + Nicosia
  • · Inter-city buses connect all major towns
  • · Single ticket €1.50, day-pass €5
  • · Apps: Cyprus by Bus (route info)
  • · No metro / tram / commuter rail anywhere on the island

Taxis & ride-hailing

  • · Bolt + inDrive operating in main cities (Uber not present)
  • · Local taxi firms still common; metered + agreed fare both used
  • · Airport transfers cheaper booked ahead than at rank
  • · No surge-pricing ride-hailing dominance — taxis remain competitive

Airports & flights

  • · Larnaca (LCA) — main international hub, busiest
  • · Paphos (PFO) — secondary, mostly W. European seasonal
  • · No domestic flights (island is too small)
  • · Major European cities on direct flights, daily
  • · Long-haul connections via Athens, Vienna, Dubai

Ferries

  • · Limited passenger ferries — Cyprus is not a ferry hub like Greece
  • · Seasonal Greece-Cyprus passenger service (Piraeus–Limassol) re-launched recently
  • · Cargo ferries year-round (Limassol port)
  • · Cruise stops common in Limassol, less so in Larnaca

Cycling & walking

  • · Coastal promenades in Limassol + Larnaca great for walking + cycling
  • · Inland cycling tough in summer (heat); cooler months excellent
  • · Akamas + Troodos hiking trails world-class
  • · Walkability score modest in suburbs, low in inland villages

Driving licence — what to do

  • EU licence holders: valid indefinitely. No action needed unless you become a Cyprus tax resident → optional exchange.
  • UK licence holders: must exchange within 6 months of becoming a Cyprus resident. No re-test usually required for established licences.
  • Other non-EU: exchange usually possible if your country has bilateral agreement; otherwise re-test required.
  • International Driving Permit: useful for the first 6 months while you sort the exchange.
