Weather, climate & seasonal rhythms
What to expect month-by-month — heat, rain, snow on Troodos, beach season.
for All
Cyprus weather is the headline feature for most relocators, and the reality is mostly what you'd hope: ~320 sunny days a year, mild winters, hot dry summers. But the inland / coast / mountain split matters more than people expect. THE THREE MICRO-CLIMATES · COAST (Limassol, Larnaca, Paphos, Famagusta) — moderated by the sea. Summer: 25–32°C. Winter: 10–18°C. Rain mostly Dec–Feb. · INLAND (Nicosia) — continental. Summer: 25–42°C, can hit 45°C. Winter: 5–15°C, occasional frost. No sea cooling at night. · TROODOS MOUNTAINS — alpine. Snow Dec–Mar (ski resort at Mt Olympus 1,952m). Summer cool by Cyprus standards (15–28°C). SEASONAL RHYTHM · Jan–Feb: coolest, wettest. Lush green inland. Locals brace for winter. Coastal still pleasant (long-sleeve weather). · Mar–Apr: spring. Wildflowers in Akamas. Mid-20s coast. Best hiking month. · May: sea swimmable from mid-May. Tourism season starts. · Jun–Aug: summer. Hot. Sea perfect. Inland air-con essential. · Sep–Oct: "second summer" — heat softens, sea warmest, light golden. · Nov–Dec: first rains return. Greens come back. Quiet. EXTREME EVENTS TO PLAN FOR · KALIMA (Saharan dust) — coats the island in fine red dust a few times a year. Usually Mar–May and Oct. Asthma sufferers + outdoor laundry affected for 1–3 days. · HEATWAVES — multiple 40°C+ days inland in Jul–Aug. AC reliability matters; rolling blackouts rare but possible. · STORMS — occasional thunderstorms Nov–Mar. Flash flooding in inland riverbeds. Drive carefully across dry-river bridges in rain. · SNOW — Troodos only. Ski lifts run Jan–Mar in most years. Coastal snow is once-in-decade. PRACTICAL IMPLICATIONS · HEATING > many expats expect. January nights inland can be 5°C indoors if heating is marginal. Check rental contracts for what's installed; budget €100–€200/month for electric heating Dec–Feb if central is absent. · AC RIGHT-SIZED — undersized AC drives summer electricity bills. Inverter units are standard; check rating before signing. · UV INTENSE — UV index 10+ in summer. Northern skin needs SPF 30+ in shaded outdoor settings. Annual skin checks recommended. · DEHYDRATION — easy to under-drink. Especially in first 1-2 years. SUMMER vs WINTER LIFESTYLE Most expats end up with two rhythms — coast in summer, more time inland or in Troodos for autumn weekends. The island is small enough that this works.
