EU citizens: the Yellow Slip (MEU1)

How EU citizens register residence in Cyprus. Apply within 4 months of arrival. Forms, documents, common pitfalls.

for EU
The Yellow Slip (officially: MEU1 — Registration Certificate for EU Citizens)
is the document that confirms you're exercising your treaty right to live in
Cyprus as an EU/EEA/Swiss national. Cyprus expects you to apply within four
months of arriving if you intend to stay longer than three months.

You apply at the Civil Registry & Migration Department (CRMD) office in your
district. Bring originals + copies. Most CRMD offices now accept appointments
online and the paperwork is straightforward if your evidence is in order.

WHAT TO BRING

· Passport / national ID (original + copy)
· Two passport photos (recent, white background)
· Rental contract or property deed showing your Cyprus address
· Evidence of resources — one of:
  · Employment contract from a Cyprus employer
  · Self-employment registration (TIC + social insurance)
  · Bank statements showing sufficient savings (€10,000+ p.a. typical) and
    private health insurance covering Cyprus
  · Pension statement (retirees) + private health insurance
· Application form MEU1 — collected at the CRMD office or printable from moi.gov.cy

THE FEE

€20. Pay at the cashier the same day.

WHAT YOU GET

A "Yellow Slip" — a yellow A4 paper certificate (no chip, no card). Keep it
safe and photocopy it; you'll need it for almost everything.

The Yellow Slip itself doesn't expire — but if your circumstances change
(employer change, new address) you should refresh it.

AFTER FIVE YEARS

You can apply for permanent residence (a separate, slightly different
document called MEU3) which gives you stronger rights and an indefinite
status independent of treaty rights.

Always confirm the latest fees and requirements at the official CRMD pages
before submitting — Cyprus updates these from time to time.
