Healthcare: registering with GeSY
Cyprus's National Health System. Who's eligible, how to register a GP, contributions, private supplement.
for All
GeSY (Γενικό Σύστημα Υγείας — General Healthcare System) is Cyprus's universal health system, launched in 2019. It covers most resident populations and most healthcare needs. WHO IS ELIGIBLE · Cyprus citizens · EU citizens with residence (Yellow Slip) · Non-EU long-term residence holders · Refugees + asylum-seekers · Family members of any of the above You must have a TIC (Tax Identification Code) and an active Cyprus residence status — this typically means waiting 1–3 months after arrival before you can complete enrolment. HOW IT'S FUNDED Income contributions on Cyprus-source earnings: · Employees: 2.65% (employer also contributes 2.9%) · Self-employed: 4% · Pensioners: 2.65% · Income from rents/dividends/interest: 2.65% There's a per-source cap (€4,770 contribution per source per year in 2024) so high earners aren't penalised infinitely. WHAT YOU GET · Personal doctor (GP) — pick one online via the GeSY portal; you can switch every six months · Specialist consultations (referral from your GP) · Diagnostic tests and lab work · Hospitalisation · Most prescription medicines (with small co-payments) · Mental-health, physiotherapy, midwifery via referral Co-payments are small (€1–€10 per visit/script). Annual limits exist for chronic conditions. WHAT GeSY DOESN'T COVER WELL · Dental care for adults (children covered) · Optical (basic only) · Cosmetic surgery · Some advanced cancer drugs (case-by-case) · Long-term private hospital rooms (basic ward stays only) These gaps are why most expats keep a private supplemental policy on top (€600–€2,500/yr per adult depending on age). HOW TO ENROL 1. Get your TIC and residence document 2. Go to gesy.org.cy → "Beneficiaries" → click through the registration 3. Choose a personal doctor (GP) from the searchable list 4. Once registered you can use the GeSY app to book appointments + view prescriptions EXPECT 1–4 WEEKS for the back-end registration to clear so your GP can actually see you in the system. The official GeSY portal is the only authoritative source — fees and rules are revised most years.
